We at Lyndon Fish Hatcheries have invested heavily in producing the best quality eggs possible for national and international customers. We offer a variety of different options for customers and we also have a breeding program to help us to continue to produce the best eggs with the best genetics.
Selection/breeding program – We have a comprehensive family selection program that utilizes the tried and true methods of quantitative genetics and also incorporates the modern advances of molecular genetics. The University of Guelph and the Huntsman Marine Sciences Centre have been instrumental in helping us get this program off the ground and continue to be a valued resource. Our strain of fish already has a reputation for rapid growth and we continue to make progress on selecting for this trait. We also select for late maturity, condition factor and spawning time. We pride ourselves in our genetic advancements in the last few years and look forward to what the future holds.
All female eggs – This is our standard eyed egg product. Due to the demands of our local Ontario customers we started producing all female eggs in 1992. Because the eggs are all female, it eliminates any issues with precocious males and significantly lowers the percentage of downgraded fillets or what some processors term “B” fillets. Another advantage is that the fish also tend to grow more evenly and this will reduce the amount of grading that needs to be done.
Triploid all female eggs – The production of triploid eggs requires specialized equipment and has also required a fair bit of research and development to produce a quality product. For this reason there is a premium put on this product. Triploid eggs are primarily required for farmers who wish to grow fish to a larger size (5-8 lbs) or who farm in areas where sterile fish are required by their local governments. Because of the extra time required in triploiding, ordering well in advance will ensure the eggs are available at your convenience.
Availability – Presently our eggs are available for shipment from early September through to the end of February. We are aware that many farmers require eggs all year round and we are working to that end. If these times of availability do not suit your needs check back often for updates on our progress in achieving this goal.
Shipping and Logistics – Our logistics personnel work very hard to ensure your eggs arrive in good condition and at the time requested. Unfortunately there is always an overabundance of paperwork that is required in shipping eggs from one country to another. Ordering well in advance will ensure that our logistics team has enough time to get the paperwork in place and investigate the most cost efficient and convenient method of shipment.
